I was faced with a very rebellious attitude from a student in my twelfth-grade class. He always questioned my authority in the classroom. It was a constant toss-up whether he would or would not do what he was asked, depending on his mood.

In confronting my confusion in managing this class of teenagers, I decided to ask my colleagues to help me search for solutions. Among the many different strategies the group brainstormed, I chose to empower this student by asking him to be responsible for taking attendance at the beginning of each class.

I was surprised by how much this request pleased him. He became even stricter than I was about noting classmates who arrived after the bell rang. He was never late himself, and he began his work promptly and without complaint. Our power struggle ended because I provided a way for him to feel a sense of belonging by asking for his help. The coded message for the mistaken goal of Misguided Power, “Let me help,” really worked.
